President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Sunday night about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Biden listed recent incidents of political violence, including the Jan. 6 riot and the attack on the husband of Representative Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“I believe it with all my soul, with every strength of my being.”
but, He called He had urged Americans to tone down the fiery rhetoric of recent months but continued to struggle at times to speak persuasively.
“Thankfully, former President Trump was not seriously injured,” Biden said, skipping the word “president.”
Later, in his speech, he mixed up the words “fight” and “vote.”
“I will continue to speak out strongly for our democracy. I will defend our Constitution and the rule of law. And I call for action at the ballot box,” Biden said.
“There’s no room for violence in the streets. That’s how a democracy should work. We debate, we argue when we disagree, we compare and contrast the characters of the candidates,” he continued. “In America, we settle our differences at the ballot box. You know, that’s what we do at the ballot box.”
In the third gaffe, he appeared to misread the speech.
“You know, we’re blessed to live in the greatest country on earth. I believe that with all my heart and soul, with every fiber of my being,” Biden said.
Biden also said in a brief speech that no firm conclusions had been reached about the shooter’s motive.
“We still don’t know the perpetrator’s motive,” he said. “We don’t know his opinions, his affiliations. We don’t know if he had help or support, or if he was in contact with anyone.”
Finally, he asked everyone to tone down their political comments.
“This violence, or any violence, has no place in America. There are no exceptions. We cannot allow this violence to be normalized. The political discourse in this country has become too heated. It is time to calm down, and we all have a responsibility to do so,” he added.
