Stabbing Incident Involving Florida Lawmaker Captured on Body Camera

Body camera footage has revealed a shocking attack in which a 38-year-old man ambushed and stabbed a Florida lawmaker on Wednesday.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported that Deputy Robert Fitch was responding to a call about a suspicious individual near 11775 NW 10th Street in Dunnellon around 5 p.m.

“I should have killed you. You’re lucky I didn’t.”

Dunnellon, situated on Florida’s west coast, is roughly an hour south of Gainesville and an hour and a half north of Tampa.

Upon exiting his vehicle, Deputy Fitch was immediately ambushed by Heriberto Medina Marquez, who knocked him to the ground, according to officials.

Marquez then proceeded to stab the deputy multiple times in the chest before fleeing into a nearby wooded area.

Fortunately, after the arrival of backup, Marquez soon emerged from the woods and was apprehended without any further incident.

Detectives have since arrested Marquez on charges related to the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

While in the police vehicle, Marquez was heard saying, “You should have killed this woman. You know that, right?” He added, “I should have killed him. I’m glad I didn’t.”

Although the deputy sustained minor injuries, officials indicated that his bulletproof vest likely saved his life.

Investigators have gathered evidence suggesting that Marquez deliberately sought to take Deputy Fitch’s life.

Two folding knives, believed to be stained with blood, were discovered at the scene.

Marquez is currently being held at the Marion County Jail without bond. He is also facing additional charges for providing false identification to law enforcement and resisting arrest without violence.
