I Wasn’t Trying to Critique Trump, Just Observing He Didn’t Call for Lower Temperature

On CBS’s “Face the Nation” broadcast on Sunday, host Margaret Brennan said that her own comments that the statement issued by former President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the wake of the assassination attempt “contained no calls to de-escalate tensions, no condemnation of any political violence, and no attempt to actually send a message to his supporters not to retaliate or escalate in any way” were “not intended as a criticism, but rather an opinion I expressed in the moment of the news breaking.”

“Our country has lived in an environment of heightened threat for far too long. Yesterday’s assassination attempt on Mr. Trump confirmed our worst fears. Last night we reported inflammatory statements from elected officials, political leaders and others who called for calm. Mr. Trump issued a statement following his traumatic experience, but I noticed that the statement did not include a call for calm. It was not intended as a criticism, just an opinion I expressed in the moment of the news. Today, he Said“At this moment, it is more important than ever that we come together,” he said, and in that spirit, let us all pray for a safe election campaign for all involved. And our former president and his family deserve our sympathy for what has happened. I wish him and his family the best as they recover from the assassination attempt.”
