The Baltimore Orioles took advantage of a ninth-inning error by their opponent to score three runs and pull off an incredible win over the New York Yankees on Sunday.
Baltimore was down 5-3 going into the final innings after the Yankees scored three runs.
Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes entered the game to close out the game, and Orioles outfielder Kyle Stowers started the inning with a single, then Colton Cowser hit a grounder on a fielder’s choice that resulted in Stowers being forced out at second base.

Baltimore first baseman Ryan O’Hearn walked to put two runners on base, but Gunnar Henderson struck out looking for the final out for Baltimore. Adley Rutschman walked to load the bases, and chaos ensued.
Ryan Mountcastle hit a grounder to Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who dropped the ball, allowing a run to score, then Cedric Mullins hit a ball to left fielder Alex Verdugo, who misplayed it, the ball went over Verdugo’s head, and Verdugo fell down trying to retrieve it, scoring two runs.
The Orioles won the game 6-5.

Volpe’s fumble was the Yankees’ only one of the game and their 10th of the season, but it was the most costly one because if he had made a clean catch, the game could have been over.

Still, Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism about his team’s performance in recent weeks despite the continued slump.
“It’s no secret that the last few weeks have been tough for us, quite frankly. We’re trying to keep a cool head and I think we’re doing a good job at that, but we’re still human and we feel those tough times in the season and when you wake up when things aren’t going your way it’s even tougher,” he said. “I think the key is always to acknowledge what you’re going through. We haven’t played great the last few weeks, but overall, we’ve played pretty accurate for the most part to put ourselves in a position to control the scenario going into the second half. It’s in our hands and it’s a result of how we played in the first half.”

Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander and Henderson each hit a home run in the game. Mullins, who came in to pinch-hit for Santander, scored the winning run and drove in the winning run. Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham and first baseman Ben Rice also homered.

With the win, Baltimore improved to 58-38. New York fell to 58-40.
