For years, the media and the Biden administration have portrayed Trump as a dictator and a threat to democracy. But in the wake of this latest assassination attempt, these same voices are now urging calm and expressing relief that Trump is safe. If Trump is truly the existential threat they have long claimed, why offer their prayers and thoughts for his safety? Their actions belie their words and reveal deep-seated hypocrisy.

The narrative that Trump is a threat to democracy is dangerous and false. People who truly believe they are living under a dictator would take extreme action: selling property, fleeing the country, silencing dissent. None of this has happened, because the narrative that Trump is a dictator is a myth. Saturday’s events prove that even Trump’s most vocal critics do not see him as much of a threat as they claim. It is time to end this harmful narrative once and for all.

This recent incident also highlights a serious failure by the Secret Service. Allowing a gunman with a rifle to target a presidential candidate was a breach of the highest order. This is not a matter of the courage of individual agents, but of a systemic failure that cannot be ignored. There are only two possible explanations: incompetence or malice. An investigation must be conducted to determine which is the case.
House Republicans, led by Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. James Comer (R-KY), recognize the gravity of the situation and are committed to uncovering the truth. We must be thorough and relentless. Given the lack of trust in the Biden Administration and the media, transparency and accountability are paramount. This investigation should be empowered by outside counsel with subpoena power to ensure a comprehensive and fair investigation.

While the Biden administration and its allies will likely resist such scrutiny, this investigation is not about politics. This is about restoring faith in our institutions and ensuring the safety of our leaders. President Biden has called for a swift investigation, and we must hold him to it. We need clear answers to fundamental questions: How did the shooter get on the roof? What procedures failed? What steps will be taken to ensure an incident like this never happens again?
