Or were they “possible shots,” as CBS News reported? And check out the Sacramento Bee: “Trump ‘fine’ after shots fired at stage during Pennsylvania campaign rally; 2 dead.” That shooter drew a bead on the stage, just as Oswald targeted that Lincoln convertible and Sirhan Sirhan fired at the wall in the Ambassador Hotel. About an hour after the assassination attempt on Trump, the FBI joined the investigation but some realities were already clear. The FBI did nothing to prevent the shooting, perhaps because the bureau’s current priority is followers of Donald Trump, not those who might want to kill him.

While the profoundly unsettling event in Butler, Pennsylvania opens up a whole host of troubling questions which we will of course address here in due course, the most pressing and immediate one is how this could have happened in the first place. How on earth could the Secret Service have screwed up so badly? To get a sense of how bad the screw up was (assuming it was indeed a screw up and not something more sinister) it is helpful to understand some facts. One might at first imagine that in order for a gunman to get within shooting distance of President Trump, he must have employed sophisticated concealment methods of the sort usually reserved for spy films. Except this wasn’t the case at all. The shooter was perched on top of a building 150 yards away from where Trump was speaking. Law enforcement experts familiar with security protocols are simply baffled that one of the few rooftops near Trump wasn’t secured, much less how a man could get up there with a rifle and have time to take a shot. Even those with no security experience whatsoever can look at the image and understand that it would be a no brainer to secure the rooftop in question. […] The sniper was already watching the shooter. Why didn’t he shoot first!

The man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who lived in Pennsylvania, not far from where last night’s rally took place. So far, not much has been reported about Crooks. He seems to have been one of America’s few 20-year-olds who didn’t have any social media accounts, but perhaps something will come to light. Predictably, Crooks has been described as a . . . […] ANOTHER THING: I meant to mention this earlier. Reportedly, Crooks was not carrying identification and was identified through DNA. I don’t understand that. How was the FBI or Secret Service able to identify Crooks through his DNA, almost immediately? Crooks apparently didn’t have a criminal record, so why would his DNA be somehow on file with law enforcement? Obviously there is an answer, but I don’t know what it is.
