MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said Monday during the network’s coverage of the Republican National Convention that Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), former President Donald Trump’s running mate, is an “extremist.”
Maddow said, “Meanwhile, former President Trump has changed the speech he had planned for this year’s Republican National Convention, saying he would focus on ‘bringing the country together.’ We’ll see how it goes. At the same time, former President Trump has moved forward with his own campaign plans, announcing Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate. Of the candidates for the vice presidential nomination, J.D. Vance is widely considered the most radical choice given his ideological stance and what he has said about what presidential power should be, what it should be, and what Trump should do. He has spoken openly about the president defying Supreme Court decisions. He has made it clear that if he were Mike Pence on January 6, 2021, he would have done what Trump wanted. He did not do what Mike Pence did, which was not do what Trump wanted. That’s why we still live in a republic.”
She added, “JD Vance is radical in terms of what he thinks Trump can do as president, and also in terms of his policies. He wants a nationwide abortion ban, with no exceptions for cases where a woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape or incest, and has said that women who are abused by their husbands should not be allowed to leave those marriages. At just 39 years old, JD Vance, having been nominated by Donald Trump today, is likely to be the future face of the Republican Party for decades to come.”
