Nine people, including one minor, were injured and are in critical condition after a fire broke out at an apartment in Brooklyn early Tuesday morning, according to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
The fire broke out just before 3 a.m. on the first floor of a building on Evergreen Street in Bushwick, authorities said.
Among the injured was a man under the age of 18, who was left in serious condition.
Among those evaluated by emergency responders at the scene were families, including babies and young children, but it was not immediately clear how many had suffered burns.
Terrified residents said they had to wade through thick, black smoke to escape the building, and firefighters had to rescue others through several windows.

“We had six dogs and a baby, my godson and the baby’s mother and I had to run upstairs and try to help,” one woman said. He spoke to ABC7 from the scene.
“I made sure everyone got out the best way possible.”
The FDNY is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
