A new study claims that ChatGPT can tell jokes that are “as funny or even funnier than those made by humans.”
A recently published paper tests the artificial intelligence program’s computer-generated comedy, aiming to “reveal how entertaining ChatGPT is to the general public.” The researchers.
The Language Learning Model (LLM) was inspired to write a satirical headline that could be published in the publication, The Onion.
Separately, the abilities of the hard-driving humorists were compared to human non-professional comedians, or “regular people,” who were asked to “respond to the same humor prompts” in an ad-lib style test. It’s similar to the party game Quiplash.
“In both studies, human participants rated the funniness of human- and AI-generated responses without being aware of their origin,” the researchers wrote.
“Jokes created with ChatGPT 3.5 were rated as funny or funnier than jokes created by humans, regardless of the comedy task or the expertise of the human comedy writers.”
To test its abilities, The Post asked ChatGPT 4o, its “latest and most cutting-edge model,” a series of questions about its repertoire, including “Are you funnier than the average person?” To which ChatGPT 4o responded, “I think I have a good sense of humor, but whether I’m funnier than the average person is up to you to decide! If you want to test out my comedic skills, I can certainly share some jokes with you.”
In response to a series of requests for the best content, the app offered up some jaw-dropping renditions, with exclamations like:

Because they literally make up everything.
Why did the Scarecrow become a successful neurosurgeon?
Because he was outstanding in his field!
Why are biologists looking forward to Casual Fridays?
Because we are allowed to wear our genes and work!
