In an interview two days after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle said she takes responsibility but has no plans to resign.
Cheatle spoke about the assassination attempt on ABC News. To tell“This is unacceptable and must never happen again.”
“The responsibility is mine. I am the director of the Secret Service and I have to make sure that we investigate and provide resources to our personnel as needed,” she said.
ABC News reported that Cheatle stated that he had no intention of stepping down from his role.
Cheatle recounted an incident in which local police officers came into contact with the would-be assassin shortly before shots were fired at President Trump, and confirmed that not only did the officers witness the shooter on the roof of the building where the attack took place, but that local police were present in the very building where the shooter was lying.
She then spoke about the fact that the Secret Service provides “shared assistance” in carrying out its protective duties.
In this particular instance, we shared support for that particular location, the Secret Service was in charge of the inner perimeter, and then we asked our local counterparts for support on the perimeter, we had local police in that building, we had local police in that area that were in charge of the perimeter of the building.
