Biden declared in an interview this week that he has “pretty good” intellectual acuity, but a number of recent polls suggest that a majority of Americans don’t think so, raising concerns about the president’s age.

“I’ve been doing this a long time. The idea that I’m an old man is true. I am an old man. But number one, I’m only three years older than Trump,” Biden said. He told NBC News“And secondly, my intelligence was so superior. I accomplished more in three and a half years than any president has ever done. So I’m happy to be recognized for that.”

“I get it. I get it when people say, ‘Oh my God, he’s 81. Wow,'” Biden added. “What’s he going to be like when he’s 83, 84? That’s a legitimate question.”

But a new national poll released this week by NBC News, which surveyed 800 registered voters between July 7 and 9, found that about 80% are concerned that Biden “does not have the mental and physical health necessary to serve a second term as president.”

In an ABC News/Washington Post poll released last week, 85% of respondents said Biden is too old to serve a second term, while 60% of respondents also said former President Trump is too old to serve a second term, up from 44% in a spring 2023 survey.

And a nationwide Fox News poll conducted after the first presidential debate and before Saturday’s assassination attempt on Trump found that 63% believe Biden’s age puts national security at risk, 71% believe the White House has been dishonest about Biden’s mental health and another 63% suspect Biden has not been as involved in important decisions recently.

The survey found that 32% believe Biden is mentally healthy enough to serve effectively as president, a record low and down nine points since May. The drop is even bigger among Democrats, down 17 points from 78% two months ago to 61% now.
