Actress Nika King stars in the new film “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot,” based on a true story of adoption and foster care. King plays Donna Martin, the wife of Bishop W.C. Martin, who worked with 22 families from his church to adopt 77 of the most difficult-to-adopt children. In an interview with CBN News, she said the events depicted in the film are similar to her mother’s own childhood story.
“This is my mother’s story.“ King said CBN News Of the movie. “She was raised by a pastor and his wife, and I knew I had to be in this film in some way.“
The actress said that her maternal grandmother was murdered and that her mother never knew her. Face Wire Reports say Nica’s mother ended up living with her three siblings in foster care, and the four were eventually adopted by a pastor and his wife, similar to what happened in the town of Possum Trot, Texas, which served as the film’s inspiration.
“It played out like this movie…the ups and downs of being traumatized, being alone, having to fend for yourself;“ King said.
King was originally scheduled to play a different role in the film, but was ultimately cast in the lead role.
“I was really happy.“ “I kept saying, ‘Yes,'” King said.
Related to her mother’s experience, King also grew up in the church and received a foundation in the Bible from her grandparents.
“My mother was adopted by a pastor.“ She said: “So we went to church three or four days a week.“
When King’s mother faced difficult times in her life, members of the church cared for her and her siblings, King said.
“My mother had her own path.“ “She ran away from home at 15 and then became addicted to drugs,” King said.
King said her mother has now been drug-free for 31 years, adding that she was grateful the film was an honest portrayal of what happened in “Possum Trot.”
“The reality is, a lot of these kids come from really bad situations.“ She said: “So if you’re thinking about adopting or fostering or taking a break from parenthood, you’ll want to look at some of these things.“
King wrote “The Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot”“ has been a positive influence on her life and career, and her life experiences and her mother’s story prepared her to star in this film.
“Everything I’ve been through has prepared me for this moment.“ She said: ““Lord, don’t waste anything. You use every last drop. I’m so grateful for your obedience.”
King said she felt the Holy Spirit moving powerfully during the shoot.
“It was so fascinating, because there were moments where it was like the Holy Spirit was in the room and they yelled, ‘Cut!’‘ And I say, “You can’t cut it like that!”” “ She said: “This is not only because God’s spirit is reflected in our performance, our words, our thoughts and our message, but also because this film is really about solving the problem we have in this country: 400,000 children in foster care.“
“This is a divine movement.“ King added.
