Social Security recipients need to update their online accounts. What to know

Millions Social Security recipients You will need to switch to the new login portal immediately to continue accessing your online account information.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced this week that users who created an online My Social Security account before September 18, 2021 will need to migrate to a Login.gov account to access online services.

According to the SSA, all users must have either a Login.gov or ID.me account to access their Social Security accounts and other online services.

Over 5 million account holders have already been transitioned to two-step verification and do not need to create a new account. There are still 46 million users who need to transition to a Login.gov account.

The ‘magic number’ for comfortable retirement hits all-time high

“We are currently in the early stages of this transition process and our current goal is to inform the public about these upcoming changes, so we have not set a final deadline for migrating remaining accounts to Login.gov,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Americans are worried about running out of retirement savings

Current account holders who wish to make the change will be presented with the option to switch to “Login.gov” when logging in with their existing credentials. Once they select this option, they will receive a confirmation that their accounts have been successfully linked. Users will then be able to access their personal “my Social Security” services.

The SSA previously said it hoped the change would help address the agency’s “customer service crisis” and reduce long wait times for people calling its 800 number. Calls to the agency averaged about 24 minutes in April, down from 42 minutes in November. The agency is working to reduce that figure to about 32 minutes by the end of September 2025.

“My Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to transact with us,” Social Security Administrator Martin O’Malley said in a statement last week. “We’re excited to transition access to our online services to Login.gov, streamlining the interagency process and making it easier for the public to use.”
