About Two-Thirds of Democrats Want Biden to Quit Presidential Race

An Associated Press/NORC poll released Wednesday found that about two-thirds of Democrats want President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

The poll comes after Biden’s infamous debate performance and his vow to remain in the race despite pressure from party members to quit.

The Associated Press reported the findings as follows:

Nearly two-thirds of Democrats say President Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and let the party nominate another candidate, according to a new poll, significantly weakening his post-debate claim that the “average Democrat” is still his supporter even if some “big names” have turned against him.

In a new study, AP-NORC Public Policy Research CenterThe survey, conducted as Biden tries to reposition himself as a candidate two weeks after his debate debacle, also found that only about 3 in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident in his mental capacity to serve effectively as president, down slightly from 40% in the previous survey. February AP-NORC Poll.

The poll finds that Black Democrats are Biden’s strongest supporters, with about half of those surveyed saying he should continue to run, compared with just 3 in 10 white and Hispanic Democrats. Overall, 7 in 10 Americans think Biden should drop out, and Democrats are only slightly less likely than Republicans and independents to say he should run a new candidate.

poll sampling The poll was conducted among 1,253 adults from July 11-15 and has a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.

Dozens of House Democrats are opposed to simply handing Biden the party’s nomination and are reportedly planning to voice their opposition to the president’s status as the de facto nominee.

The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has brought a pause to the intra-Democratic fight over whether Biden should remain the party’s presumptive nominee. Since Saturday’s violent attack on the Democratic Party, no Democrats have publicly opposed Biden, a positive sign for the president.

That pause appears to be coming to an end, but it remains unclear whether opposition to Biden can survive the current media cycle surrounding the Republican National Convention, Trump’s running mate and the assassination attempt on Trump.
