When President Trump took the stage for his primetime speech, he was wearing a Comperatore firefighter’s helmet and jacket, and early in his speech, President Trump walked over to the Comperatore memorabilia and kissed the helmet.

Comperatore’s surname was intentionally misspelled on his fire jacket, due to the limited number of characters that could be written on the jacket.

Trump then returned to the microphone and asked the audience to observe a moment of silence in memory of the 50-year-old.

Comperatore sacrificed his life to save his family: when the shots rang out, his first instinct was to shield them from the gunfire.

“He was a fine man, a highly respected former fire chief,” Trump said. “… He sacrificed his life acting as a human shield to protect people from bullets flying around. He was flying over people’s heads and got shot. He was a truly honorable man.”

Trump had been speaking for a few minutes in Butler when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on the former president. Crooks, 20, aimed at Trump’s head. Trump turned his head to look at a graph on a screen. The movement caused the bullet to go through his right ear instead, ensuring his death.

Comperatore was sitting in the auditorium behind where Trump was speaking at the time of the attack.

No other deaths were reported, but two men at the scene, David Duch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were both shot. Both are expected to make full recoveries.

Shortly after the shooting, President Trump set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the families of the three shooting victims.

He announced to the audience at the Republican National Convention that more than $6 million had been raised for the victims by Thursday night.

Comperatore is survived by his wife and two daughters.
