JD Vance, others say Biden should resign presidency if he drops out of the race

New Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance wrote in a post on X on Friday that if Democrats believe President Biden doesn’t have the mental acuity to run for reelection, it will be hard to make the case that he should remain in office until January.

“If Joe Biden is not cognitively capable of running for reelection, then he is certainly not cognitively capable of remaining commander in chief,” Vance wrote. “How can Democrats who are pressuring him to withdraw from the presidential race in any good faith argue that he should remain in office?”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) echoed similar sentiments Thursday, speaking to reporters at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

“The question is, if he can’t be their nominee because he’s not qualified, then how can he be president for the next six months,” Rubio told Politico. “If he has problems that prevent him from running for president, then how can he remain president? If they take him off the table, they should take him off the table too. That would be really bad for our country.”

Nate Silver, a polling guru and founder of FiveThirtyEight, told X earlier this month that Biden “is a candidate for the presidency.” [Vice President Kamala] Harris is due to arrive in the next 30 to 60 days, and I’ve just arrived. Something is clearly wrong.”

Rep. Marie Grusenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) has also called on Biden to resign.

New poll reveals how Democrats think of Harris as president

“The American people should feel that the president is fully capable of doing the job,” she told KGW-TV. “The crisis of confidence in his leadership needs to end. He should do what he knows is right for the country and put the national interest first.”

Following Biden’s dismal performance in the debate late last month, a growing number of Democrats are calling on him to withdraw from the presidential race, fearing he will lose to Trump.

Historian Alexis Ko wrote in a Rolling Stone magazine op-ed on Friday that Biden should step down “to protect his legacy.”

Alan Lichtman, a presidential historian who has accurately predicted nine of the last 10 elections, also said that if Biden were to drop out of the race, Harris taking over as president would be Democrats’ best chance of retaining the White House in November.

Biden and his campaign have said the president is “in this race to win,” but there are reports he is changing his mind amid growing calls for him to withdraw.
