Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on Saturday did not strongly endorse President Biden continuing the campaign, reiterating that he is “our candidate” but also said he has “big decisions to make.”

Warren is also expected to support Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed Biden if he steps down, praising her as the ideal candidate to carry out the Democratic case against former President Trump.

“Joe Biden is our nominee and he has some really big decisions to make. Joe Biden has been a transformative president,” Warren told MSNBC, praising his record. “I’m deeply grateful for all that Joe Biden has accomplished.”

Biden has repeatedly insisted he will continue to run the campaign as a growing number of Democrats call for him to step down, fearing he will lose to Trump. But Warren, echoing former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s skepticism earlier this month, appeared to give Biden further leeway.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) appears on MSNBC on July 20, 2024.

MSNBC aired footage of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a far-left lawmaker who has remained openly loyal to Biden, saying there was no “consensus” for Harris to replace Biden if the campaign to remove the president from the running was successful.

When asked if she had heard the same thing from Ocasio-Cortez, Warren repeated the same thing.

“Joe Biden is our nominee, and as I said before, he has a really big decision to make,” she said. “But my great hope right now is that even if President Biden decides to step aside, Vice President Kamala Harris will be ready to step up and unite the party, take on Donald Trump and win in November. Let’s not forget that 80 million people voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020.”

Warren pointed to Harris’ record as a prosecutor as evidence that she would be a good candidate to face a “convicted felon,” referring to Trump’s 34-count conviction last month for falsifying business records.

“No matter what happens, I’m going to fight for the Democratic Party,” she said. “I believe that together we can win in November.”

MSNBC host Alicia Menendez, the daughter of Warren’s colleague and now-convicted New Jersey senator Bob Menendez, asked Warren whether Harris should become the de facto nominee if Biden were to withdraw.

“As I said, Joe Biden is our nominee. He has a very big decision to make,” Warren said, using the phrase for the third time. “But we are very fortunate to have Vice President Kamala Harris, 80 million people voted for her. She will step up if we need to, and I’ve known Kamala for a long time and think very highly of her. But I want to emphasize: Democrats will be united. I’m going to fight for this candidate, and so are many others. We’re going to be united and win in November.”

Biden is currently recovering from COVID-19 and is in quarantine as he faces daily public calls from Democrats to drop out of the race. Biden has said he has no plans to step down since he has already secured the nomination, and his campaign has denied reports he is considering other options.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
