There’s no cure for Joe Biden’s summer blues, but there’s still hope for his party in the fall if he steps down and another Democrat comes out on top. Reportedly The president is considering the possibility.
These are times that test the soul of man — at least the soul of men and women who value the rule of law, diversity, and the promise of America’s future. The Democratic Party represents these sacred values.
But the Democratic watchword is discord. President Biden has come under not-so-friendly attack from Democrats since his nationally televised debate with Donald Trump. The attacks have come from Democrats like Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff, as well as liberal Hollywood activists like George Clooney and Rob Reiner, all of whom hail from heavily Democratic California.
The Republican slogan is teamwork. Delegates to the Republican National Convention hailed the former president as a hero even after the assassination attempt and the mutilation of what they held dear. Anti-abortion statement in party platform.
Yes, federal judge Eileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, has dismissed charges against President Trump for concealing classified military and diplomatic documents and set the stage for the trial. Her decision was based on the opinion of the other Supreme Court justice, Clarence Thomas, who sided with President Trump in the presidential immunity case. This cannot be a fabrication.
The difference between Democrats and Republicans is as clear as night and day. Republicans grease the wheels for their candidates, while Democrats put up speed bumps. Humorist Will Rogers once said, “I don’t belong to any organized political party. I’m a Democrat.” His comments were funny then, but they’re deadly serious now.
Trump clearly has the wind in his favor: A new Emerson College poll shows him with statistically significant leads nationally and in key battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
There are two factors that could help the new Republican candidate gain more ground in the polls. Trump’s popularity is likely to rise in the aftermath of the convention. And the president’s COVID-19 infection could exacerbate already-prominent concerns among voters about their age and health. It will be important to watch as Republicans exploit these perceptions to attack the president as weak on immigration, crime and China.
Time is running out, and Democrats need to come together soon and reset the presidential race, or they will suffer. Now is the time for unity, energy and enthusiasm that Democrats lack and Republicans have in abundance.
Abraham Lincoln’s famous words, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” certainly applies here. Even more pertinent for Democrats are Benjamin Franklin’s words after signing the Declaration of Independence: “We must all unite, or we will surely be hanged each separately.”
Democratic unity is as important as the midday sun on a clear summer day, and with the president gone, younger Democrats like Vice President Kamala Harris can hit the reset button and move the party forward.
The Democratic field, led by Harris, 59, and featuring Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, 46, as his running mate, would give the president’s party a chance to refresh itself and turn the tide on the age issue against the 78-year-old former president.
Trump’s choice of Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio is a clear indication of his extremism in his second term. Vance has strongly opposed U.S. aid to Ukraine and Supporters of a nationwide abortion ban.
If Vance’s nomination doesn’t scare you yet, take a closer look at the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, a home for former and future Trump administration staff. These proposals would deal a major blow to Social Security benefits and the fight against the growing threat of climate change.
Trump called for national unity in his convention keynote address. Sears, Roebuck and Co., which, like Donald, specializes in strong domestic alliances, tried to rebrand itself with a “Softer Side of Sears” campaign. The ad effort was a dismal flop, making the Republican candidate’s calls for unity ring hollow in the shadow of his divisive first term.
Time is running out. The president must quickly quell Democratic opposition or retreat to another constituency. Biden will leave a lasting legacy by leading the charge to reform the American economy and fight the destruction of climate change. He will leave the White House untainted by defeat. And finally, he will begin a promised transition to a younger generation of Democrats who will continue to fight for America’s future.
