Former late-night comedian David Letterman will headline a fundraiser for President Biden on Martha’s Vineyard, despite growing calls from Democrats to oust Biden from the race for the White House.
The fundraiser on July 29 will be held at the home of a family friend of Hawaii Governor Josh Green.
The presidential campaign also has at least 10 fundraising events scheduled for the final day of July.
Critics said the move to hire Letterman, who helmed CBS’ “Late Show” for 22 seasons, was a bad joke.
“Joe Biden’s campaign is desperate for donors [that] “He’s now bringing in a failed comedian,” said Republican strategist Garrett Bentley, “while Democrats are desperately trying to get him out because Trump and the Republicans are outdoing them in the polls.”
Other critics slammed the media supporting Biden’s campaign.
“If Joe Biden survives, it’s not the public or the politicians that will save him. It’s the media that has defended him all these years,” said Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.). “This is nothing new. The only surprise here is that David Letterman thinks he still matters.”
News that Letterman is trying to save the Biden campaign comes as other celebrities, including actor George Clooney and author Stephen King, have called for Biden to drop out of the race following his abysmal performance in the June 27 debate with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Biden has argued that he is the best Democrat capable of defeating Trump.
Greene has known the Biden family for many years — his wife’s uncle was Biden’s college roommate — and said the decision about whether to drop out of the race must be made by Biden himself.
“We support the president, the vice president and the Democratic Party because he’s been there for us as a family and as a state,” he said.
