Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. was found dead Saturday night in Porcupine Reservoir, about 40 minutes from campus. The university said he drowned after diving off a cliff.

He was 22 years old.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the scene around 2:20 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a young man who had jumped off a cliff and failed to resurface and may have drowned.

Seldon’s body was recovered by a Utah Department of Public Safety dive team at approximately 9:05 p.m., and the sheriff’s office said an initial investigation determined Seldon’s death was a “tragic accident.”

“Our football program is heartbroken by the loss of one of our colleagues,” Utah State said.
Interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling said in a statement:
Speaking of his relationship with Andre, who he attended with at New Mexico State University,
He was a great person and teammate. My condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family.
We join them in mourning this great loss.”

Seldon is in his fifth year of college football and his first at Utah State after transferring from New Mexico State, where he spent the past two seasons and served as team captain.

A four-star prospect out of Belleville High School in Michigan, Seldon began his collegiate career at Michigan, playing one game each of his first two years, before transferring to New Mexico State, where Dreiling was the defensive coordinator for his final two seasons.

“The Utah State University athletics team is saddened by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon.
“We are mourning the loss of our junior athlete,” Utah State University Vice President and Athletic Director Diana Sabau said in a statement. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved him.
“Andre.”
