Scottie Scheffler’s chances of winning the 2024 British Open all but ended on the ninth hole of the final round Sunday.
The two-time Masters champion was tied for fifth at the time, two strokes behind the leader at four under par, but had a chance to make a par putt from about six and a half feet from the cup but three-putted for double bogey to drop to two under.
The 28-year-old missed his first putt wide left, then flicked the ball away on his next putt from less than three feet away.
The NBC broadcast showed Scheffler closing his eyes and looking disgusted with himself after the hole.
He soon found himself five strokes behind the leader as Thriston Lawrence led the pack at seven under par midway through the final round.
Justin Rose and reigning PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele were tied at 6 under after 11 holes.
Scheffler started the day at 2 under par, with a birdie on the par-4 third hole and a bogey on the par-5 sixth hole.
He then recorded consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth holes before three-putting disastrously.
Scheffler’s previous finishes at the British Open are a tie for eighth in 2021, a tie for 21st in 2022 and a tie for 23rd last year.
After winning his second green jacket in April, he finished tied for eighth at this year’s PGA Championship, during which he was infamously arrested in a traffic accident, charges later dropped.
Scheffler finished tied for 41st at last month’s U.S. Open.
