Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance has called on President Biden to immediately leave the White House.
In a message sent shortly after Biden announced he was suspending his campaign, the Ohio senator argued that if the president is not fit to campaign, he cannot be trusted to remain in the White House.
“Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was correct in his assertion all along that Biden is not mentally qualified to serve as commander in chief,” Vance wrote to X.
“There’s no middle ground,” he continued.
Biden shocked the political world on Sunday afternoon when he caved to immense pressure to stop campaigning.
“Democrats can’t have it both ways. If Joe Biden can’t perform well in debates and rallies, he can’t take on Putin or get access to the nuclear codes,” Savannah Beer, deputy communications director for the Republican National Congressional Committee, also said in a statement Sunday afternoon.
Earlier on Sunday, Sen. Joe Manchin joined four other Senate Democrats in calling on President Biden to step aside and allow a “new generation” to rise to power.
Sen. Manchin (Independent, WV), who left the Democratic Party in May but still caucuses with the party, is joining the call along with Sens. Peter Welch (D-VT), Jon Tester (D-MT), Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH).
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
