Patrick Mahomes and Xavier Worthy, the Chiefs’ first-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, have already looked in sync in training camp and drew plenty of attention during the first full-team practice on Sunday.
Worthy received a pass from Mahomes and scored a touchdown on a deep post pattern route.
The telepathic understanding between the two astounded the audience. According to ESPN:.
Worthy also erupted in celebration, and an excited tight end, Travis Kelce, began dancing near the middle of the field after the play.
Wide receiver Mecole Hardman said Worthy is “adjusting well,” according to ESPN.
“He’s got speed so I’m pretty sure we can use him to get deep, so now I’m just looking to get him and Pat together and carry that into the season.”
At the NFL Scouting Combine, Worthy ran a 4.21 second 40-yard dash, the fastest time ever in the event.
“That’s a lot of speed,” Hardman said.
“I think we’re a good group. [and] They bring new energy to the attack and of course there’s Lassie. [Rice]”He’s a bulldog, he does all the dirty work, he takes the under-routes, he’s like a horse that can get a lot of yards, and then he attacks with all the little gadgets and explosives here and there.”
Mahomes and Worthy’s play gave the impression that the duo had worked extensively together during the offseason.
But Worthy has been sidelined for most of that time due to a hamstring strain.
ESPN reported that Mahomes is eager to have the 21-year-old return, but the quarterback also insisted he could be expected soon.
“He works hard,” head coach Andy Reid said of Worthy.
“The hamstring seems to be better. We’ve got to get him here and keep him learning. We’re just [practice] With 12 guys there, there’s a lot more information given to him – formations, shifts, motion – but he did a good job today.”
Once training camp is over, the Chiefs will move on to the 2024 season looking to make history by winning a third consecutive Super Bowl.
“We all inspire each other,” Hardman said.
“We have a great team. Everybody knows what’s going on. Everybody knows their role. I think everyone’s role will be established in training camp.”
