Sen. Joe Manchin is considering challenging Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to reports on Sunday.
Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia who declared independence this year, is considering whether to return to the Democratic Party and run for the White House, according to a source close to his office. He told CNN.
The 76-year-old called on Biden to drop out of the race on Sunday morning, just hours before the 81-year-old announced his withdrawal.

“I hope so, because I think he’s going to leave a great legacy as one of the greatest leaders we’ve ever had,” Manchin said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“It is with a heavy heart that I say this and make this decision. I believe now is the time to pass the baton to a new generation.”

Before leaving the Democratic party to run as an independent in May, Manchin announced he would not seek reelection to the Senate, but appeared to backtrack when pressed about it earlier in the summer.
“I can’t walk away from a political opportunity. There are always options, because life is full of surprises. But I’m not planning on running for office,” he told CNN in June.
