AI bicycle safety device could warn of dangerous car collision

Roads are becoming more and more dangerous for cyclists, and the numbers paint a dire picture. We recently reached a heartbreaking milestone: the number of recorded bicycle fatalities in the United States is at an all-time high. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states: 1,105 cyclist People have lost their lives on public roads, a stark reminder that despite well-intentioned efforts by various government agencies, we still fall short when it comes to keeping cyclists safe.

But things could be improving: a groundbreaking gadget called Survue could help keep cyclists safer on the roads. Of course, we’ve seen bike radar systems before, but Survue seems to be in a class of its own. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, the device takes cyclist protection to a whole new level.

Let’s be honest, there are probably a lot of people out there who would like to ride their bikes more often but are held back by safety concerns. And who could blame you? With Survue on the roads, it might just change the way you think about bike safety.

Bicycle safety device that surpasses conventional radar

Developed by Maine-based entrepreneur Josh Fox, Survue is an innovative device that seeks to overcome the limitations of existing bike radar systems. While traditional systems focus primarily on the speed of approaching vehicles, Survue takes a more holistic approach, taking into account multiple factors to assess potential risk.

While Survue is not the first AI-based bike safety device to hit the market, it differentiates itself with its comprehensive approach and compact design. Key features of Survue include AI-powered vehicle detection, 3D location and path prediction, vehicle type identification, automatic video recording, and an enhanced taillight warning system.

In case you’re wondering what Survue actually means, it’s derived from two French words: sûr, meaning safety, and vue, meaning view.

How Survue works

Unlike traditional radar-based systems, Survue uses cameras and advanced AI algorithms to analyze the road behind the bike. The device can detect approaching vehicles, determine their speed and location, and even predict their trajectory. This advanced analysis allows Survue to distinguish between passing vehicles and those that pose a collision risk.

How does the device warn cyclists and motorists when they are in a dangerous situation?

When Survue detects a potentially dangerous situation, it alerts cyclists in a variety of ways, including an audible alarm on the device, a notification via an optional iOS/Android app, and a visual indication on the handlebar-mounted smartphone. It also warns motorists and distracted drivers by increasing the flash frequency of the built-in 80 lumen tail light.
