In the first 24 hours since President Biden ended his reelection effort and endorsed Vice President Harris as his successor as the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris raised $81 million, her campaign announced.
In an emailed statement Monday afternoon, Harris’ campaign touted the funds raised as “the largest 24-hour fundraising effort in the history of a presidential election.”
According to the campaign, more than 888,000 grassroots donors contributed within 24 hours, with 60% of them giving for the first time during the 2024 election cycle. The campaign also said that 43,000 of those donors have signed recurring donation agreements.
But the Harris campaign did not disclose what percentage of the $81 million, which includes money raised by the campaign, the Democratic National Committee and joint fundraising committees, came from small donations made online versus donations from large donors.

“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris truly represents the grassroots energy and enthusiasm to win this election,” campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said in a statement. “Already, we’re seeing a broad and diverse coalition coming together to support our important work to speak to the voters who will determine the fate of this election.”
Democrats are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to finalize the timing of Harris’ nomination for president.
The amount raised in one day easily eclipses the roughly $53 million that former President Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee raised through online digital fundraising platforms about two months ago in the first 24 hours after Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts in a criminal trial in New York City.

Ms. Harris’ fundraising announcement comes at a time when the party has rapidly embraced her after Mr. Biden dropped out of the race. The president’s endorsement of Ms. Harris shortly after suspending his own campaign sparked a surge in support for Ms. Harris from Democratic governors, senators, representatives and other party leaders who expected her to succeed Mr. Biden as party leader in 2024.

Biden suspended his campaign activities on Sunday amid growing pressure from within the Democratic Party to withdraw following his dismal performance in last month’s debate.
The 81-year-old president was unsteady and awkward in his answers for the first 20 minutes of the debate in front of a national audience, raising immediate questions about whether he was mentally and physically capable of serving another four years in the White House.

The money Harris has raised in the past 24 hours will help rebuild Biden’s once-massive campaign coffers, which have been partially depleted as fundraising has begun to dry up amid growing calls for him to drop out of the presidential race.

“Public opinion is growing in support of Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump knows and fears that his divisive and unpopular policies are no match for the Vice President’s record and vision for the American people,” Munoz said in a statement.
The Biden campaign and the DNC had led Trump and the RNC in fundraising this year, but in the second quarter of 2024, from April to June, Trump and the RNC outraised Biden and the DNC, $331 million to $264 million.
