Suspected car prowler attacks armed homeowner. Despite warning shot, attack persists — but next shot ends things permanently.

A north-central Washington homeowner shot and killed a suspected car-prowler during a standoff Sunday night.

An armed homeowner approached the suspects tampering with the homeowner’s vehicle around 7:15 p.m. on Hanford Street near Omak Avenue. KXLY-TV reported.According to a release from the Omak Police Department, the city of Omak is approximately 50 miles from the Canadian border.

The homeowner has not been arrested or charged, KPQ reported.

Police told the station that the homeowner did not have a gun and that the suspect attacked him, knocking him down.

The homeowner’s spouse fired warning shots into the ground, but the assault didn’t stop, police told KXLY. KPQ-FM reported. The warning shots were meant to scare off suspects.

Police say the partner managed to pull the suspect away from the homeowner, but the suspect assaulted her again.

Police told KXLY that the homeowner shot the suspect once, who then left the property and collapsed in the street, KPQ reported, adding that police found the suspect lying in the street with a gunshot wound.

KPQ reported that the suspect was taken to Mid Valley Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The homeowner has not been arrested or charged, KPQ reported.

Police told KXLY that an investigation into the use of deadly force is ongoing and the findings will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office to determine whether to file charges.
