The St. Louis Cardinals garnered social media attention over the weekend when they performed a home run celebration that appeared to be a tribute to former President Trump.

As Cardinals designated hitter Alec Burleson trotted around the bases after hitting an extra-base hit against the Atlanta Braves, he and his teammates in the dugout covered their right ears and pumped their fists.

The remarks sparked speculation that they were a tribute to Trump, who was injured in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, but Cardinals veteran Matt Carpenter denied the tribute after the game, telling the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that “it was never a political statement.”

Still, Keith Olbermann argued that MLB should “ban” the players for celebrating, “confiscate” the franchise, and “destroy” Busch Stadium.

“Dear @mlb, ban these players from baseball for life, confiscate the @Cardinals franchise, and destroy their stadium,” he wrote to X, equating the players with “Trump Nazis” and arguing they should “stick to sports.”

“America is sick of this bullshit” Olbermann added:.

Carpenter also explained that the celebration was a nod to Burleson’s time in college, when he was a rapper known as Biscuit, with his hands over his ears meant to represent invisible headphones.

Olbermann did not appear to comment on Tampa Bay Rays infielder Taylor Walls, who pumped his fist and yelled “Fight! Fight!” after hitting a double against the New York Yankees.
