Kamala Harris Record Creates Turbulence for Battleground Senate Democrats

Democrats in the Senate battleground are facing tough questions about Kamala Harris’ record now that she is seen as the leading Democratic presidential nominee.

The Associated Press reported Monday that Harris has secured more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win the first round of voting to become the Democratic presidential nominee at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

Now, battleground Democrats such as Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Bob Casey (D-Pennsylvania) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) must confront Harris’ controversial record as vice president and her policies.

Democratic senators worried that a lack of voter enthusiasm for Biden would hurt Democratic turnout in Senate battleground states.

The Democratic Party is in the minority as Harris’ presidential candidate. Tester has not yet endorsed Harris, but Brown, Casey, Rosen and Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) have all voiced their support for her presidential bid.

“Republican Senators are in meltdown because they are still tied to the same flawed candidates and harmful policies that have kept Democrats at bay all election year,” Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Tommy Garcia said in a statement. “Senate elections are contested by candidates, and we have far better candidates, so we will win.”

The document released by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) on Monday argues that Harris’ nomination would mean disaster for lower-ranking Democrats because of her “extreme policies” and subpar campaigning skills.

“While the case against Joe Biden rested in part on the fact that he was mentally unfit to hold public office, this was harder to apply to a lesser candidate. Kamala Harris is carrying the weight of a Biden administration and is a self-described extremist,” Thielman explained in the memo obtained by Breitbart News. “To support Kamala Harris is to support her radical policies, and it could be argued that Harris is a greater threat to the Democratic Senate majority than Joe Biden.”

Harris also has some radical policy ideas, according to Thielman, including:

  • Harris has pledged to decriminalize border crossing and supports abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  • Harris has pledged to abolish the filibuster to pass the Green New Deal.
  • Harris supported a bail fund that has released “convicted criminals who have subsequently murdered people.”
  • Harris has pledged to preserve private health insurance but enact Medicare for All.
  • Governor Harris supports confiscation of firearms through a mandatory buyback program.

“Candidates should not be shy about aggressively aligning their opponents with Kamala Harris’ radical policies. Kamala Harris is not a good candidate,” Thielman concluded in the NRSC memo. “When she first ran for president, she dropped out of the race in Iowa and was trailing Andrew Yang in the polls.”
