A fake letter falsely claiming that former President Jimmy Carter has died has been circulating on social media platforms, fooling many people, including Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee and multiple news organizations.

Right-wing media personality Laura Loomer reposted the screenshot, which appears to have caused a huge spread on Twitter.
Loomer later realized the post was fake and responded again on social media platforms.
“The letter that Jimmy Carter has died appears to have been fabricated. It’s horrible. Why would someone fabricate a letter that a president has died? I have deleted the letter and am praying for President Carter and his family. People should not post death hoaxes,” she said.
The letter claiming that Jimmy Carter had died appears to have been fabricated.
That’s terrible. Why would someone fabricate a letter saying the president had died?
I have deleted the letter and am praying for President Carter and his family.
The Carter Center and President Carter’s physician confirmed that, although his health was poor, he was still alive.
Carter has been receiving hospice care at her home in Plains, Georgia, since February 2023.
Reuters We then contacted the owner of the account that allegedly created the letter, who said:
“I made this last night. The amount of misinformation that was spread over the weekend surrounding President Biden’s health was infuriating…. I wanted to prove that many people on X are spreading sensational news and headlines without actually fact-checking or double-checking the source content.”
Loomer faced some backlash after a number of X users pointed out that the letter was “obviously fake,” after which she deleted the post.
Laura, that was satire, literally congratulating Carter for “going soft on the Soviets” and calling Nancy Reagan a “throat goat.”
“When she died last November, President Carter said, ‘Rosalynn was a bad girl. Jill, Melania, even Nancy Reagan, were no match for Rosalynn. She was the original brat.'”
New York Post and Scripps News Media outlets also ran stories about the fake letter before realizing the mistake.
