Cook County residents could receive automatic refunds on overpaid property taxes, and here's how to check – NBC Chicago

More than 10,000 Cook County property owners overpaid their property taxes last year, and the Treasury Department is sending out millions of dollars in automatic refunds.

Treasurer Maria Pappas said the $22 million in refunds are expected to be distributed in the next few days, and in most cases, those eligible for the refunds will not need to submit an application or fill out any paperwork.

“For seniors and many others, the value of the tax reduction, known as the exemption, is greater than the amount of property taxes they were charged,” Pappas said in a statement. “They already paid their first installment in March and are therefore entitled to a refund that will be sent automatically for the convenience of taxpayers.”

About 6,000 of the refunds will be paid by direct deposit, with the rest expected to be paid by check by Aug. 9, officials said.

If residents believe they are entitled to a refund, Visit the Cook County Treasurer’s website. Select “Property Tax Summary” and enter your address.

Officials say the bulk of the refunds will go to homeowners who received property tax exemptions.
