Most Students Are Aligned with Conservatives, But College Campuses Make It Difficult to Speak Up

Scott Walker, a former Republican governor of Wisconsin and president of the Young America’s Foundation, said most students align with conservative values but that the “radicalization of college campuses” makes it harder for them to speak out.

“We’ve gone from left-wing bias to the radicalization of college campuses,” Walker told Breitbart News reporter Bradley Jay on Tuesday at the Young America’s Foundation (YAF) National Conservative Student Conference in Washington, DC.

“This isn’t just about imposing their agenda; if you don’t agree with them they will cancel you. They are actually quite dangerous in some cases,” Walker added.

The former governor continued, “Our polling shows that. We polled before the presidential debate and the overwhelming majority of college students are neither conservative nor liberal. The most common response was centrist.”

“If you’re a student on a college campus and you say you’re a moderate, it means you’re very open to conservative ideas and you’re just afraid to call yourself a conservative,” Walker said.

“The No. 1 issue is economics. Then there’s issues of fairness – should men participate in women’s sports, should people be able to get into college or get a job based on their race? The overwhelming majority of students said no, that it’s not fair,” Walker explained.
“So when they’re independently, privately talking to pollsters, they’re all in sync with us the whole time,” the former governor argued.

Elsewhere in the interview, Walker spoke about the benefits young people get from attending conservative conferences.

For example, we have someone like Katie Pavlich. She went to her first Reagan Ranch Conference in 2008, and who did she hear? Andrew Breitbart. She was so inspired by the talk that she wanted to pursue that as a career. This all came from attending the conference not really knowing what the future held, listening to Andrew speak, meeting and engaging with other students, and then seeing what kind of change she’s making today.

Jay responded by pointing out that Breitbart News has “several YAF alumni who have gone on to do great things in the conservative movement.”

“In many ways, you’re preparing young people not only to make an impact now, but to put them on a path to leave school, go out into the country and achieve really big things,” Jay added.

“What we’re doing is developing the next generation of freedom fighters,” Walker explained.

“you [Breitbart News editor-in-chief] Think of people like Alex Marlowe, Winton Hall, and Peter Schweitzer. Peter has attended our meetings, as have the other two, seven times now. The New York Times The latest bestselling book is Blood Money,” Walker added.

The former governor added that Schweitzer is not only a best-selling author, but also a “great investigative reporter” who “really has an impact on a lot of people.”

“So some of these young people will be future congressmen, future governors, maybe even future presidents,” Walker said. “Some of them will work in media, social media, education.”

“As Andrew said, politics is downstream of culture,” Walker said. “We need people at every level who are not afraid to stand up and speak the truth.”
