What to know about Doug Emhoff, possible first first gentleman

Doug Emhoff, the first person to serve as vice president after Vice President Harris became the first woman to serve as vice president in 2021, could make history again if Harris defeats former President Trump in November.

Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, Emhoff has been a vocal opponent of anti-Semitism.

As protests spread to Columbia and colleges across the country, he called out Jewish campus leaders and also condemned former President Trump’s comments about Jewish Democratic voters as “offensive.”

Advocating for reproductive rights

Emhoff has been a strong advocate for reproductive health issues since the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 2022. During an interview with NBC’s Yamishe Alcindor in May, he urged more men to join the fight for abortion rights.

“This is about fairness to women. Women are dying,” Emhoff told Alcindor. [men’s] “It’s about the loss of the ability to plan one’s life. It’s also about what happens next and what other freedoms are at risk. And these freedoms don’t just affect women, they affect all Americans.”

Also in July, he made his first visit to a reproductive health clinic and held a roundtable discussion with people affected by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which returned the right to abortion to the states.

This comes after Harris became the first vice president to visit an abortion facility in March.
