According to a YouGov poll conducted on July 21, the day President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection, just 37% of respondents said Vice President Kamala Harris should replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee.

Overall, just 37% said Democrats should nominate Vice President Kamala Harris, while more than a third (35%) said “someone else,” and more than a quarter (27%) said “I don’t know.”
Independents did not support Harris, with a majority (36%) saying the Democratic nominee should be “someone else,” while another 30% said it should be Harris and 34% were “unsure.”
Notably, 60 percent of Democrats said Harris should be the nominee, while the remaining 40 percent either think it should be someone else or are unsure. Of that 40 percent, 21 percent said it should be “someone else,” and 19 percent remained unsure.
The survey was conducted among 2,048 U.S. adults.
YouGov is also Asked That same day, respondents were asked whether they supported Biden’s decision not to seek reelection, and a majority, 71 percent, said they strongly or somewhat supported it. Among Democrats, 70 percent said they strongly or somewhat supported it.
The poll comes at a time when key Democratic figures have begun rallying behind Harris after Biden announced his endorsement for her.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus my efforts on the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term. My first decision as the nominee of my party in 2020 was to select Kamala Harris as my vice president,” Biden said after his initial announcement, hailing it as “the best decision I’ve ever made.”
“Today I want to fully endorse and support Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats, now is the time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it together.”
He added:

Since then, other leading Democrats have come out in support of Harris, including North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Hillary Clinton, who called Harris a “great prosecutor.”
