Jonathan Owens keeps his cool amidst the chaos.
The Bears safety is adjusting to his new team after signing a two-year contract with Chicago in March while also supporting his wife, U.S. gymnast Simone Biles, ahead of the 2024 Olympics, which begin this week in Paris.
Owens, 29, explained how the couple deals with the increased attention they’re receiving, especially during an Olympic year.
“The easiest way is [to handle it] “You just try to block out the noise, because whether you’re doing something good or bad, people are always going to say something,” the former Packer told The Post. “There are layers to everything. Don’t take everything with a grain of salt. People have to do their job and if it’s social media, people will talk, but don’t let it distract you from your main purpose, which is what I try to do.”
Owens seemed unconcerned about the nonsense he faced on social media.
The couple made headlines after Owens insinuated during an appearance on the show that he was the “glamour” in their relationship. “pivot” During a podcast last December, he said he didn’t know who Biles was before he and she started dating.
His comments caused some controversy because the 27-year-old Biles is the most decorated American gymnast in history, having won seven Olympic medals, including four gold medals, and eight USA Gymnastics championships.
Biles later explained that the controversy was funny.
“He never said I was unattractive. He said I was attractive, because he is.” She said During an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in April, she said: “I’ve never met a man like him. A lot of people who meet him say, ‘Oh, I want a man like that.’
Biles and Owens, who met on the dating app Raya and have been dating since 2020, celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary in April.
The seven-year NFL veteran explained that it’s important for the couple to make time for each other despite their respective work schedules.
“Going to various events and coming to watch soccer games is [us] “Having my family support me makes me want to try harder and be better,” Owens told The Washington Post. “That’s just something we always try to support each other with, because we understand what each other is going through and how hard it is to be a professional athlete.”
“It’s been an amazing experience… I don’t think I could do it any other way with my wife because we understand each other and we support each other completely.”
Owens attended all of Biles’ competitions this summer. She was seen cheering on Earlier this month at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Target Center in Minneapolis.
The Bears granted Owens permission to sit out training camp from July 29 to Aug. 3 to support Biles in Paris during her third Olympic trip.
“It’s out of respect for the Olympics,” Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said. From ESPN“That’s a big thing. He’s just rooting for the person he loves the most. I think it’s really amazing that he can do that. We welcome it and it’s going to be great. Go for it, USA.”
The Bears opened training camp on Tuesday, three days before the opening ceremony in Paris.
Owens plans to attend the Olympics and watch Biles compete in the team and individual events before returning to training camp.
The Paris Olympics will be Owens’ first time attending an international competition under Biles’ direction, as COVID-19 regulations mean no spectators were allowed at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
In Tokyo, Biles dealt with “Twisties” and the mental strain of not being able to compete in such high-profile competition, leading her to withdraw from several events.
Owens, who is vying for the backup safety position behind Bears starters Kevin Byard and Ja’Quan Brisker, will miss the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game between Chicago and his former team, Houston, on Aug. 1 in Canton, Ohio.
The St. Louis native said he’s excited about his new life in Chicago, which already feels like home.
Owens has been training hard and feeling great since incorporating Good Sport into his diet in 2023.
He has sickle cell disease and becomes oxygen-deprived, so staying hydrated is crucial.
“Some sports drinks just don’t give you the hydration you really need and I got really cramped,” Owens said, adding that clean ingredients are crucial to his overall health.
