President Joe Biden delivered a brief address to the American people from the Oval Office on Wednesday night, just days after announcing he was withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race.
Appearing a little out of breath and stumbling at times, Biden said the “best way to move forward” was to “pass the baton to a new generation” and let “new voices, fresh voices” and “younger voices” lead the country.
Biden, who endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his presidential candidate on Sunday, did not mention Harris until the end of his speech, where he called her “tough” and “competent.”
Biden also said his accomplishments during his first term as president “deserve a second,” but that he had decided to put aside “personal ambitions.”
“This isn’t about me,” he added. “This is about you.”
Biden also said he would “fulfill the duties of your presidency” over the next six months, and then spent much of the rest of his speech talking up his own accomplishments.
Biden — Sunday approved Vice President Kamala Harris didn’t mention Ms Harris until the end of her Oval Office speech, when she announced she was dropping out of the presidential race, calling her “tough” and “capable.” Ms Harris said the choice in November’s election was “up to you.”
As for Harris, it was reported on Monday that she has likely secured enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee.
Biden had been under increasing pressure from Democrats to withdraw from the race after his disastrous defeat in a debate with former President Donald Trump last month. After Biden announced he was dropping out of the race, Republicans across the country called for him to step down if he couldn’t complete the campaign.
And Biden’s voice, strained, weak and stammering during an apparent phone call to Harris’ campaign headquarters on Monday, did little to allay concerns about his health.
