Following the July 21 announcement, President Joe Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office on July 24, explaining why he chose to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
“It has been the honor of my life to serve as your president, but I believe that is more important than any title in protecting our democracy at a time of crisis,” he said in a televised address from behind the Resolute Desk.
“I find strength and joy in serving the American people, but this sacred mission of perfecting our union isn’t about me. It’s about you, your families, your future. It’s about We the People.”
“So I decided the best way to move forward was to pass the baton to a new generation.
“That’s the best way to unite our people. You know, there’s a time and a place for years of experience in public office. There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now.”
Donald Trump slammed the speech, calling it “barely understandable and very bad.”
