MLB has thrown its second no-hitter in the 2024 season.
Padres right-hander Dylan Cease pitched a no-hitter against the Nationals on Thursday afternoon in Washington, throwing 114 pitches, walking three and striking out nine in San Diego’s 3-0 victory.
It was the 28-year-old’s first career no-hitter, having previously pitched an 8 2/3 inning no-hitter against the Twins as a member of the White Sox in 2022 before it was suspended.
It was just the second no-hitter in Padres history.
On April 9, 2021, they became the last MLB team to pitch a no-hitter when manager Joe Musgrove led them to a no-hitter.
Cease has a 3.50 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 131 innings this season.
Astros’ Ronel Blanco threw his first no-hitter of the season against the Blue Jays on April 1.
With the win, San Diego extended their winning streak to five and improved their record to 55-50.
At the time of the win, they held the third wild card spot in the National League.
