Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa agree to record $212.4 million contract extension: reports

Tua Tagovailoa, coming off the best season of his career, isn’t going anywhere.

He and the Miami Dolphins reportedly agreed to a four-year contract worth $212.4 million, including $167 million guaranteed.

The $212.4 million is the 10th-largest payout in NFL history and the largest in the league’s four-year history.

His average salary of $53.1 million per season is the third-highest in NFL history behind Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence.

Tagoa Vailoa has been a controversial quarterback since being drafted fifth overall out of Alabama in 2020. He suffered two concussions in 2023, one of which was so severe it caused a bent finger and prompted a major change in the league’s concussion protocol. Just four days earlier, he had felt dizzy and collapsed to the turf, but he played Thursday night. The NFL determined he did not suffer a concussion in the first incident.

However, the quarterback suffered a concussion late in the season and ended up missing a game against the Green Bay Packers.

Many wondered — and still do — if Tagovailoa was one hit away from abruptly ending his career, even admitting last year that he’d considered retiring after a horrific 2023 season.

But he played in all 17 games for the first time in his career last season and set career highs in receiving yards (NFL-leading 4,624), touchdowns (29), completion percentage (69.3) and wins (11).

The Dolphins lost the AFC East title at home to the Buffalo Bills in Week 18, then traveled to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in sub-zero temperatures, where the Chiefs defeated the Dolphins 26-7 to win their second consecutive Super Bowl.

Tagovailoa becomes just the seventh quarterback in NBA history with an average annual salary above $50 million (all since last year), joining Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Jared Goff, Lawrence and Burrow.

For his career (53 games played, 51 starts), he completed 66.9% of his passes for 12,639 yards and 81 touchdowns while posting a 32-19 record.
