A teenage boy died while subway surfing in Queens on Friday, police said.
According to the New York Police Department, the 15-year-old boy was found on the elevated train tracks at the Beach 90th Street station in the Rockaways neighborhood just before 5:30 p.m.
The boy, who suffered serious head injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they were investigating the tragedy as a “possible subway surfing incident.”
“Subway surfing,” which involves standing on top of a moving train, has become a dangerous and sometimes deadly trend among thrill-seeking teens in New York City.
In June, a 13-year-old boy died after falling from a northbound No. 6 train onto an elevated road in the Bronx.
On the same day, a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured while riding on the same subway train.
In the first six months of 2023, there were 450 reports of people riding outside or on trains, a significant increase from the 262 reported during the same period in 2019, according to MTA statistics.
