Saints quarterback Jake Haehner revealed Friday that he has a rare form of skin cancer.
Haehner, a 2023 fourth-round draft pick out of New Orleans, said his condition is not life-threatening and he will be examined next week to determine a treatment plan.
“At my age, it’s unusual for something to pop up like this,” Hehner said. Saints official website“I’m trying to get our training staff to evaluate that.
“Consult with your doctor [on] “On August 1, my day off, I’m going to try to figure out how long I can wait because I have to get another surgery on my face. So I’m trying to take the steps I need to take to figure out how long I can wait until that surgery is done.”
Haehner said he noticed a “strange swelling” about a week or two before training camp started and had it removed by a dermatologist.
The 25-year-old point guard is competing with South Carolina seniors Spencer Rattler, a 2024 fifth-round draft pick, and Nathan Peterman for the Saints’ backup quarterback position behind starter Derek Carr.

Hoehner appeared in good spirits despite the frightening diagnosis.
“I’m young and healthy, so I don’t expect something sudden like this to happen, but I want to be mindful of it and be responsible,” he said, “and of course, not let it become a distraction, because I know I’ll be OK and it’ll all be handled just fine.”
“But I don’t want to wait long for something like this and I want to deal with it quickly. [on it]”The organization was very helpful in communicating with me and making arrangements to make sure I was healthy.”
