Yankees could deal Nestor Cortes at MLB trade deadline

PHILADELPHIA — The Yankees are clearly buyers at the trade deadline, but they also can’t rule out selling at least one major league player in order to acquire more talent.

The Yankees have plenty of balls to throw ahead of Tuesday’s 6 p.m. deadline, with Nestor Cortes’ name coming up in trade talks, Jon Heyman of The Washington Post reported Monday.

The Yankees were thought to be interested in Cardinals utility player Tommy Edman, who has been on the disabled list all season after undergoing offseason wrist surgery and then suffering a sprained ankle while rehabbing.

However, the Cardinals are reportedly trading Edman to the Dodgers in exchange for Erick Fedde to the Cardinals.

Of course, if the Yankees trade Cortes, they would need to make another move to fill a hole in the starting rotation, with Clarke Schmidt not expected to return from the disabled list until late August.

Heyman reported Sunday that the Giants are among the teams interested in left-hander Blake Snell, but it remains to be seen whether the Giants (53-55) will actually sell.

In 22 starts this season, Cortes has a 4.13 ERA in 124 1/3 innings. He has struggled in his last three starts, giving up 15 runs in 13 1/3 innings against the Rays (twice) and Red Sox.
