Migrant in vicious Times Square attack on cops takes plea deal

One of several undocumented immigrants accused of assaulting two NYPD officers in Times Square earlier this year accepted a plea deal in court on Monday.

Under terms of the deal offered by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Darwin Gomez Izquier, 19, will serve 364 days in prison.

The other immigrants, Yohenry Brito, 24, and Ulises Bohorquez, 21, were offered a plea deal to plead guilty to second-degree assault in exchange for a year in prison, the New York Post reported, citing the district attorney’s office.

Patrick Hendry, president of the New York Police Benevolent Association, said the suspects should receive longer prison terms but he was pleased that Gomez Izquier pleaded guilty to the felony charges.

“However, important challenges await him once he has completed his sentence,” he said in a statement. “Upon his release, he will be immediately deported and must never set foot on our streets again.”

Hendry noted that several other defendants also played significant roles in the gang assault case against the police officers, and that their cases are still pending.

The incident began in January when an NYPD officer and a lieutenant were attacked in the streets of Times Square after they ordered several migrants to evacuate. Surveillance footage showed the migrants attacking the officers, punching and kicking them as they fell to the ground.

Many were charged with assault and released without bail. One suspect, Yeoman Reveron, 24, had two counts of assault and robbery pending trial.

The attack sparked criticism of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the Biden administration over the flow and release of migrants into the United States.
