A strategist for former President Barack Obama praised the current Midwest governor for “aggressively campaigning” to join presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ campaign.
David Axelrod, a chief strategist for former President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, praised Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in a social media post after it was reported that Waltz was on the shortlist to be Harris’ running mate.
“Whether he wins or not, Minnesota Governor @Tim_Walz is arguably running the most aggressive VP campaign of any candidate,” Axelrod posted alongside a glowing Politico article detailing Walz’s “Midwestern grit.”
While much of the discussion about potential vice presidential candidates has focused on four names – Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina – Walz is included on a broader list along with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.

Walz attracted media attention last week when he described former President Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, as “just weirdos” in an interview on MSNBC.

The Trump campaign responded to the Democrats’ “weird” campaign on Sunday after Trump spokesman Steven Thune posted a video of Waltz calling Trump and Vance “weird” while campaigning for Harris. Thune accused the Democratic front-runner and his supporters of going too far in “trying to make everyone think the shooting was staged,” referring to the assassination attempt at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania.
