A new Harvard-Harris poll finds that support for Israel remains strong and is getting stronger among American voters.
The poll, conducted July 26-28 among 2,196 registered voters with a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points, found that 80% of voters continue to support Israel in its war against Hamas, the same percentage as in June.
Nearly two-thirds, 66%, believe Israel is trying to minimize civilian casualties, up from 62% in June, and 70% think a ceasefire should only happen if Hamas is removed from power in Gaza, up from 67% in June.
Similarly, 66% said Israel should retaliate if Hezbollah continues to fire rockets at Israel, roughly unchanged from 67% in June (Israel had not yet launched its June 30 airstrikes against Hezbollah second-in-command Fuad Shukr).
The poll found Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump leading the presumptive Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, by three points, or four points if “unknown” responses are excluded.
The gap between Trump and Biden has narrowed from 7 percentage points in June when “I don’t know” was an option, and when “I don’t know” wasn’t an option the gap remains the same, with Trump leading by 4 points.
An earlier version of the poll had shown registered U.S. voters tend to support the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and oppose those of U.S. President Joe Biden.
