As Tennessee holds its primary election on Thursday, a conservative congressman who has twice filed impeachment charges against Vice President Kamala Harris is drawing national attention.
Republican Rep. Andy Ogles, a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus and a vocal critic of President Biden’s administration, is seeking a second term in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District and is facing a primary challenge from Nashville City Council Member Courtney Johnston.
After filing articles of impeachment against both the president and Harris last year, Ogles filed a second article of impeachment against the vice president after he presided over the Democratic National Convention on Biden’s behalf.

Ogles faced some controversy two years ago as he won a crowded Republican primary in the redrawn 5th Congressional District, which includes southern Nashville and nearby suburban and rural areas.
The Republican lawmaker again introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Harris.
While the two are similar in that they support conservative policies, Johnston has criticized Ogles as an “idle whitewash” and “scandalized.”

But Ogles has the backing of former President Donald Trump, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, as well as House Speaker Mike Johnson and Sen. Bill Hagerty.
Johnston has the backing of many mainstream Republicans, including former Senators Bill Frist and Bob Corker and former Governor Bill Haslam.

Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a former assemblyman seeking a second six-year term in the Senate, is the clear favorite in the Republican primary to face off against Tres Whittam, a former state Senate policy analyst who finished last in the 5th Congressional District primary two years ago that Ogles won.
The primary elections for the Democratic Senate nomination are expected to be fierce.
The state, which is overwhelmingly Republican, is also holding primaries for Senate and House seats.
