If Republicans truly believe we are living through unprecedented and dire times, they should use their current power to show it. Canceling the August recess and setting the stage for a border-crossing budget fight in September would show the American people how Republicans will govern if they win the election. Instead of taking taxpayer-funded trips abroad, Republicans should use August to grab attention and mount a month-long closing argument to get the budget passed at 11:59 p.m. on September 30, the day the fiscal year ends.
Political imperative
The reality is that the polling favoring Trump over the past few months was an illusion based on Joe Biden’s unique and unprecedented weakness. Even though Biden was at the top of the list of candidates, most polls showed Democrats outperforming in the Senate races and many had Democrats ahead on the popular vote issue. Now that Biden has been sidelined, Republicans must consider the possibility that they are facing the same political environment in which Democrats have been winning consecutive battleground states since 2017, despite a general poor performance, a terrible economy, and national security challenges.
What if Republicans had run into September with the slogan, “No borders, no budget!”
With the Republicans on vacation all summer, Kamala Harris will be grabbing headlines with the freshness of her candidacy, the intrigue of choosing a running mate (presumably from a battleground state), and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago at the end of August. Given that the Republicans have already held their convention and enjoyed the best three-week news cycle in history, we can expect them to dominate the Democrats. Harris, in particular, should be held accountable for all the failures of the current administration.
But that’s not the case.
Most polls remain close after the Republican National Convention, and Democrats have leads in most lower-tier districts. This could be a honeymoon period for Harris reflecting a temporary media cycle boost. But Republicans must consider the possibility that the national climate may be reverting to trends seen since 2017. Over the past six years, Democrats have won nearly every major race in Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, outperformed expectations in nearly every special election, and defied 200-year history of winning midterm elections despite negative public sentiment toward their policies and the direction of the country.
Clearly, it is the political imperative and responsibility of the American people over the next 100 days to focus on policy, rather than the melodramatic politics that have so adversely affected the Republican Party in recent years.
If there is one issue that will weigh on Harris, it is the border. The media is desperate to erase her record as Biden’s appointed border commissioner. Polls show immigration is the Democrats’ biggest weakness. The September budget bill, just before early voting, is their last chance to make the issue known to voters. The Republican-controlled House must pay attention and maintain focus on this important issue. It’s time to use it or lose it.
Trump should ask Speaker Johnson to reconvene at least one week before the Democratic National Convention. A three-week break is plenty, and is much longer than most Americans take in the summer. Every day, lawmakers should hold hearings, press conferences, and votes on a different aspect of illegal immigration that harms Americans. Every day at the Republican National Convention, there should be a great video showing the victims of illegal immigration and fentanyl. Unfortunately, there are countless American victims.
We are now Known terrorists Tens of thousands of people crossing the border to be released by Biden-Harris administration Chinese nationals People are coming in droves. We have no end to Venezuelan gangs or Central American child rapists. Communities suffer from drugs, crime and the cultural destruction of public school districts. Overwhelmed by these invadersIt’s sad but true that there are casualties every day, and the phrase “every day,” repeated by Sen. Ted Cruz at the Republican National Convention, should provide a blueprint for the message to be delivered in the special session on the border.
The time is now
For Republicans, these important campaign issues could not come at a more important time. It would be politically dishonest to ignore the entire six-week campaign and adopt a strategy of fighting until the clock runs out when they are likely behind. The past few years have clearly shown that Republicans have failed to bring these issues to the national spotlight. Angus Reid The poll gives Harris a 2-point lead, but Trump leads on every major issue: Voters support “mass deportations” by a 13-point margin and believe Trump would do a better job of dealing with crime, the economy and foreign policy than Harris.
So what’s going on? It’s clear that the Republican Party has allowed itself to be defined by personal politics rather than the issues that matter.
Imagine if Republicans, with the support of their campaign organizations, held a marathon session centered on the message of defunding the Democratic policies that capture and release aliens who commit crimes at the border. They would: Host of DHS Programs The US was flying in unvetted illegal immigrants with taxpayer money to circumvent asylum laws. This includes 550,000 illegal immigrants who are spouses of legal residents whom Biden has pardoned, and 860,000 who have been granted “Temporary Protected Status.” What if we had a slogan heading into September that read, “No borders, no budget!”
As conservatives, we slept through the primaries and ignored the leftward shift of the Republican Party and Trump in our mission to unite and win the general election. So now that the general election is looming and the Democrats are flush with money, ground work, and momentum, do we really want to do what it takes to win?
