‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ actor says Jennie Garth age-gap romance ‘would be illegal’ today: More ‘prudish now’

Grant Show is looking back on his on-screen romance with Jennie Garth in ‘Beverly Hills 90210’.

Appearing on the “Melrose Place” rewatch podcast, “Still there.” The 62-year-old actor spoke about the “creepy” romance between his character, 25-year-old handyman Jake Hanson, and high school student Kelly Taylor, played by Garth.

“They cast me on ‘Melrose Place,’ but they were planning on putting me on ‘90210.’ Like a stepping stone“Melrose Place” Was “Not a Spinoff,” Shaw Says [or] I felt like I knew all of that stuff. And then I was on three episodes of “90210.” [as] Jake.

Jake Hanson was featured on “90210” as a handyman hired to build a “gazebo in the backyard for Kelly’s family.” Garth and Shaw’s character shared a kiss in the pilot episode of “Melrose Place.”

“[It] It is now illegal, [part of the] me too [movement]”I guess it was just a kiss, but yeah, it’s not good. Isn’t it weird that in some ways people are more chaste now than they were 30 years ago?” Shaw said.

“Grant is a very forthright, ethical guy and he would never do something like that now, but it was romantic at the time. We forget how much that sort of thing can get nasty over the years.”

Though Garth was over 18 in real life, Shaw said the age difference between the two characters would be unacceptable today.

“In reality it’s not that crazy. [but] “You can tell they’re in high school,” Shaw said of their characters. “I’d put it in those terms.” [of the age gap]that’s creepy.”

“She was a grown-up, professional actress,” he said. “I didn’t really think much of it while we were filming it. But then I watched it and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, look at that.’ … It’s not.”

“I was watching it thinking, surely they’re going to kiss, but they’re not going to. And then I was like, ‘Oh my god, they’re kissing, they’re kissing!'” Thorne-Smith told the outlet: “It just got old fashioned. Grant is a very forthright and ethical guy and he would never do something like that now, but it was romantic at the time. We forget how old fashioned these things become.”

‘Beverly Hills 90210’ premiered in 1990 and starred Garth, Shannen Doherty, Tori Spelling, Luke Perry, Jason Priestley, Brian Austin Green, Ian Ziering and Gabriel Carteris.

“It’s still really raw,” she admitted. “I’m still grieving and it was a shock because we all knew Shanann had been battling cancer for a long time, but there was something special about her. She was such a fighter and such a professional, and for some reason I just didn’t see it happening.”

She added: “It was a huge shock to all of us.”

Garth also spoke about how the entire cast is coping. loss“From that experience I’ve learned that it’s great that brothers and sisters can always support each other in happy and sad times and it brings us closer together,” she said.
