The three American hostages released on Wednesday in a prisoner swap with Russia were seen smiling and proudly holding up the U.S. flag in their first official photograph since their release.
The three men, Evan Gershkovich, Ars Kurmasheva and Paul Whelan, were released in the largest prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The multinational agreement, which resulted in the release of more than 20 people, was the result of lengthy and secretive behind-the-scenes negotiations that succeeded despite relations between Russia and Washington being at their worst since the Cold War, according to the White House.
