There is widespread speculation that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Middle Eastern media are deliberately spreading false reports that an Israeli airstrike was responsible for the leader’s death in order to shift the blame for security lapses that may have led to the failure to detect a bomb planted under their watch.
The building was not completely destroyed, and evidence gathered showed that the deadly explosion was not an airstrike, but rather a bomb located inside the house.
Haniya was staying at an Iranian guesthouse on Wednesday when the explosion occurred, a claim confirmed by Middle Eastern authorities. He had arrived in the capital Tehran on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Massoud Pezechkian.
A bodyguard who was with him in the house was also confirmed dead.
Middle Eastern authorities claim that their investigation confirmed that a bomb had been planted in the guesthouse about two months before Haniya’s stay there.
On the other hand, A The New York Times The report on the incident details accounts from five Middle Eastern officials who said “Israeli intelligence officials briefed the U.S. and other Western governments on the details of the operation shortly after it took place.”
Several U.S. officials also concluded that Israel was behind the bomb. The New York Times.
Moreover, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Wednesday that the US had no advance notice of the assassination plot.
The attack is widely believed to have been carried out by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, but because the killing took place inside Iranian soil, there has been no official statement on whether the assassination was successful.
